Vacinação III e quarentenas (continuação da pandemia pós abril23)

jan24

The government has issued new guidelines for people testing positive for Covid-19, advising them when to medicate themselves and when to seek treatment.

It says it has issued the new protocols because of “rising activity of the coronavirus in the local community” in the wake of the “gradual decline of natural infection- and vaccine-induced immunity, coupled with the emergence of new subvariants and the increasing flow of people”.

Around 70 Covid-19 infections are being reported each day in Macao, according to the head of the Health Bureau Alvis Lo. He made the disclosure to the media yesterday on the sidelines of the BEYOND Expo 2023.

The figure compares to a daily average of just 10 infections a day reported in April, the Macau Post Daily reports.

The spike comes as six more patients were admitted to hospital with Covid complications on Wednesday, according to the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre. That brings to 36 the number of Covid patients hospitalised between 1 and 10 May, compared to just five for the month of April.

Three of Macao’s principal officials have come down with Covid-19. André Cheong, Wong Sio Chak, and Elsie Ao Ieong U – respectively the secretaries for administration and justice, security, and social affairs and culture – are presenting mild symptoms.

The Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre says two of them tested positive for Covid-19 during a trip outside Macao and all three have been infected for the first time.

As many as 6,000 people a day could be infected later this month, at the peak of a wave of Covid-19, according to researchers at the Macau University of Science and Technology.

The estimate, reported by local broadcaster TDM, comes as five people were admitted to hospital due to serious complications from the coronavirus. According to the Health Bureau, the number is the highest requiring hospitalisation since early February,

New Covid-19 vaccination recommendations came into effect in Macao yesterday, as the city confronts a surge in respiratory illnesses with as many as 900 people a day turning up at the emergency department of the Conde S. Januário Hospital.

Under the amended guidelines, residents who have not received a BioNTech mRNA bivalent jab are recommended to have one. The bivalent vaccine provides antibody protection against the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants in addition to the original COVID-19 strain, unlike traditional monovalent vaccines, Macau Post Daily reports.

Authorities in Macau announced on Wednesday that from April 29 (Saturday) people that have arrived in the city from either Taiwan or overseas and intend to travel to mainland China within seven days will have to hold a test result produced within 48 hours proving they are ‘negative’ for Covid-19 infection.

The result could be from either a nucleic acid test or a rapid antigen test, according to a statement from Macau’s Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre.

People in transit at Macao International Airport with a destination on the mainland would have to present a ‘negative’ result for Covid-19 either before boarding the first flight or the connecting one at the city’s airport.

Local authorities have amended their guidelines for wearing masks, amid what appears to be a major outbreak of respiratory disease.

According to a report in the Chinese-language Macao Daily, the government will also be announcing the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases on a daily basis once again.

The new mask recommendations take effect from 28 April, according to a translation of a government announcement issued in Chinese. While it is now “recommended” that masks be worn on public transport – instead of making them mandatory – their use is encouraged at “large gatherings, events or meetings, especially when people come from a wide range of sources and are highly mobile”.

Face coverings are also recommended for “other indoor venues”
