Futuro do turismo II

The market-consensus ‘negative’ rating outlook on credit instruments currently applicable to Macau gaming firms could be lifted this year, against the backdrop of the Macau casino market recovery seen since January, says Bloomberg Intelligence.

There might be debt market tapping from the second quarter for some Macau-linked names, the organisation stated.

“The better-than-expected Lunar New Year visit numbers might lead to positive earnings revisions, which could lead to faster-than-expected restoration of credit metrics,” said Cecilia Chan, credit analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, in a Monday podcast.

“We now expect the leverage of most gaming issuers could fall to below their respective downgrade thresholds, from the end of 2023, which means there is a chance that the ‘negative’ rating outlook would be lifted,” she added.

The Macau SAR will be the second city worldwide – only after Hong Kong – with the most significant international travel spending by 2032, a report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) indicates.

China will reopen the border with its special administrative region of Hong Kong e Macau on Sunday for the first time in three years, as it accelerates the unwinding of stringent COVID rules that have battered its economic growth.

The opening will bring the resumption of quarantine-free travel between the financial hub and the mainland, although it would be done in a "gradual and orderly" way, China's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office said in a notice on Thursday.

40 million tourists per year

Macau casino operator MGM China Holdings Ltd says it expects the Macau market to be able to attract about 40 million tourists per year, as travel restrictions are eased, and based on further investment to attract visitors from overseas.

The number was mentioned on Saturday by Pansy Ho Chiu King (pictured), managing director of MGM Grand Paradise SA, the local concession-holding entity of MGM China. With her was Kenneth Feng Xiaofeng, MGM China’s president and strategic and chief financial officer.

The Macau government has announced a new subsidy scheme for local travel agencies, with the aim of attracting more mainland China tourists and getting such visitors to extend their stay. The subsidy plan, to be implemented in 2023, is being run by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

The scheme offers up to MOP250 (US$31) per night per tourist from mainland China, for tour groups that comprise at least 10 people. The application for subsidy would have to be submitted by local travel agencies, according to the announcement.

Monday’s announcement by the National Immigration Administration (NIA) that electronic applications for individual and group travel visas to Macau would reopen from Tuesday is a “great boon” for Macau’s return to normalcy and could help operators print positive EBITDA by December, according to JP Morgan.

In a note, research analyst DS Kim observed that the NIA’s announcement suggests eVisas will resume for 49 eligible cities from tomorrow, rather than the phased roll-out originally predicted. He also said the process appears to be the same as pre-COVID days – near-instantaneous with on-site approval from a walk-in and no need for pre-registration, visa interviews or seven-plus days of waiting.

Two-and-a-half years after COVID-19 struck, tourism industries around the world are gradually recovering. However, Macau is still in a state of lockdown with tourism operators suffering significant pain. The question now is: what will the future of the tourism industry look like?
